What is a pocket door?
A pocket door is a sliding door that, when fully opened, disappears into a "pocket" in the adjacent wall. They are usually used when space is limited, as the swings of ordinary hinged doors can take up more space, making pocket doors more convenient and spacious.
How to install pocket doors?
Installing pocket doors in an existing home will be more challenging than in a new build because it is more complicated. First, you need to consider where to place wiring, switches, pipes, and receptacles. You will also need to determine if the existing walls are load-bearing, as the load-bearing walls will need to be supported during the work. The pocket door is designed to integrate with the stud wall (install the drywall directly on the kit, don't build the wall first.)
What if I already have a doorway?
If you already have an existing masonry wall, you may find it more appropriate to use wall-mounted slides and rails, as this is easier than having a carpenter build a single stud skin of his own design on one side. This way, when the walls are finished, the thickness will be kept to a minimum. Standard wooden doors can be used as long as they are only 35mm-44mm thick, the height and width can be according to your requirements, but the weight must fit within the weight range of the kit you choose.
Can I install pocket doors myself?
Some pocket door kits require professional installation, but some can be installed by experienced DIYers. If you have little or no woodworking or DIY experience, we highly recommend getting someone to install the door for you.
What does the pocket door hardware include?
Typical pocket door hardware includes rails, slides, brackets, and blocks, and features a fire-resistant pocket door system that also includes intumescent fire-resistant seals. The kit also contains wall reinforcements that provide structural strength within the walls, these are the drywall to which the plasterboard will be attached. The stiffness of the wall will depend on the strength of the wall reinforcement, which will increase with the price of the kit. Some pocket door kits can be sold with optional accessories, such as wall reinforcements for extra-tall pocket doors over 2.4m.
