Summary
What is hardware powder coating? Why should I PVD coat my stainless steel hardware? Below we've created this guide to explain the benefits and differences of these long-lasting finishes.
Many WEKIS products and hardware are available in powder and PVD coating. But we are often asked what is powder coating? Or why should I PVD coat my stainless steel? So we created this guide to explain the benefits and differences of these long-lasting finishes.
What Is Powder Coating?
Powder coating applies a protective layer of polymer resin to the surface. It is so named because the process involves spraying dry powder onto an object, such as a door handle or number plate, and then baking the object in an oven to "cure" the powder. Under heat, the powder melts into a smooth durable surface that bonds well, resists corrosion, and has an improved appearance. Powder coatings last for over 20 years and come in a variety of shades and colours.
What is PVD Coating?
PVD coating (or Physical Vapor Deposition coating) is a high-quality surface treatment that is increasingly popular for use on architectural hardware. PVD coating is a process in which a thin layer of metal is vaporized and deposited onto the surface of a product. This coating is known for its durability and corrosion resistance, making it an excellent choice for door handles, locks and other architectural hardware exposed to the elements.
In addition to being durable and corrosion-resistant, PVD coatings are also environmentally friendly. It does not require the use of chemicals or post-cleaning disposal, so the environmental impact is very low. The PVD coating process produces no harmful by-products or emissions, making it a sustainable choice for building hardware. Studies have shown that PVD coatings can extend the life of a product by up to 10 times, in some cases lasting more than 25 years.
Why Should I Choose PVD Stainless Steel Instead of Ordinary Stainless Steel?
The PVD process not only prolongs the life of the product, but also reduces maintenance. This coating is known for its durability and corrosion resistance, making it an excellent choice for door handles, locks and other architectural hardware exposed to the elements.
PVD metal coatings are stronger and more durable than the "substrate" or metal beneath the coating. As a result, when coating stainless steel items with PVD, the primary stainless steel is now covered with a better, more durable metal layer.
One of the main advantages of PVD coatings is their ability to resist wear. The PVD coating is four times harder than chrome, making it extremely hard and scratch-resistant. They're also resistant to fading and discoloration, so the finish will stay bright and vibrant for years to come.
What Is the Difference Between Powder Coating And PVD Coating?
Powder coating and PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings are both finishes applied to a product to improve its appearance and protect it from wear and tear. However, there are some key differences between the two.
Application Process
One of the main differences is the application process. Powder coating is a dry process in which a powdered substance made of resins and pigments is applied to a product using electrostatic charges. The product is then placed in an oven where the powder melts and forms a hard, durable surface.
PVD coating, on the other hand, is a wet process in which a thin layer of metal is vaporized and deposited onto the surface of the product. The process typically involves a high vacuum chamber, cathode (product to be coated) and anode (source of metal vapor). The metal vapor is then deposited onto the product surface, creating a thin, hard and durable surface.
Long Lasting
Both powder coating and PVD coating offer excellent durability and corrosion resistance, but PVD coating is generally considered more durable and longer-lasting. PVD coatings are also less prone to fading and discoloration, whereas powder coatings can fade over time.
Scratches & Scuffs
While both powder coating and PVD coating have scratch and corrosion resistant properties, PVD coating is more scratch resistant and is usually preferred for high traffic areas or exterior uses, but both are preferred for high usage areas Excellent choice.
PVD is by far the most durable material and requires the least maintenance and upkeep. Note, however, that while the PVD coating is unlikely to be scratched, it cannot be reapplied if scratched, so it is unlikely that the PVD coating will be permanently damaged. If scratches occur or the coating fades, it can be reapplied with a powder coat finish.
How Do They Differ Aesthetically?
For many, the main difference between the two coatings is the aesthetic and style options offered.
Since powder coating is a powdered polymer, it comes in just about any color you can imagine, including matte or gloss, satin or eggshell. Note that like painting walls, some items are more damaged than others. For custom powder coatings we offer more than 100 different RAL colours. However, by the same token, powder coating can never give a metallic finish; if you want the look of copper, steel or gold, you need coated metal.
PVD coatings are metallic, so the palette is more limited, but provide a metallic finish that will last a lifetime. Although the range of colors available is limited, colored PVD is now widely used in architecture and interior design. Colors include PVD Satin Stainless Steel, PVD Satin Black, PVD Bronze, PVD Satin Gold, PVD Bronze and PVD Polished Copper.
How to Care for Powder Coated Hardware?
Compared with paint, powder coating has extremely strong anti-rust, anti-corrosion, anti-flaking and anti-fading capabilities. However, this resilience is not suitable for chemical cleaners and solvents to clean powder coated stuff is completely safe. Acetone and other harsh cleaners and solvents can actually damage powder coatings.
The powder-coated finish remains cleanable. Just wipe off the dust with a soft clock. If additional cleaning is required, carefully clean with highly diluted mild soapy water and a soft washcloth or sponge. Rinse with water and pat dry with another soft towel.
If the Powder Coat Has Changed
If your powder-coated metal loses its luster, it's easy to restore its luster. After removing the grime with a mild soap, you can apply a thin coat of wax as you would wax your car. After the wax dries, wipe it all off and the powder-coated metal will return to its original luster. Note that we only recommend this for non-matte finishes. Always try on an inconspicuous place first.
Don’t Paint!
If you're wondering if you can fix imperfections in a powder coat with paint, don't! Due to the polymers in the powder coating, the paint will not stick. If your powder coat is showing wear and tear, you will need a professional to repair or redo the powder coat.
Leave It Alone
It may seem counterintuitive, but both PVD coating and powder coating are corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance coatings. They will last the longest if they are cleaned infrequently, gently, and used mostly as intended.
How to Care for PVD Coating?
PVD is used for its durable, scratch-resistant finish. But even then, PVD coatings can still be damaged by severe impact or repeated friction with abrasives. For daily cleaning, wipe with a soft, clean cotton or microfiber cloth.
Using Cleaners
Never use strong alkaline or acidic cleaners such as soap flakes or vinegar. The former leaves an oily film that wears away the coating over time. The latter can damage or etch the coating. Includes steel wool and polish. Likewise, do not use highly abrasive scrubs or steel wool, they will scratch the coating and are not necessary for cleaning PVD coated products.
But, I had PVD and it wore off before?
When PVD is applied very thinly and used repeatedly (such as some watches), the PVD may peel off. Some industries refer to any matte ferrous metal as PVD. True PVD, especially the one used by well-known designers and retailers, will not wear out if cared for properly.
